Pink Moon /// Moon and Aries

Moon and Aries consists of Jordana Moon and Tom Aries, two artists who have formed this creative electronic pop art project. Jordana represents Canada and Tom hails from Germany, but their musical tastes and influences touch across the world’s music from Massive Attack, Portishead, Depeche Mode, and to Tori Amos. With “Pink Moon”, the multi-instrumentalist duo deliver a beautiful tune that combines their wide range of influences.

With lush, pretty vocals, Jordana delivers an emotive performance over the synthesized and acoustic instrumental that feels other worldly in its timbre. The song introduces itself with spacious arpeggiated synth rhythms that get backed by beautiful strings reminiscent of Royksopp’s signature sound. Jordana’s voice fits the music perfectly and the visceral nature hits its apex when the hook arrives with a gorgeously delivered melodic vocal line.

The verse embodies a cinematic, subtly ominous underbelly created by the low end frequencies. There is something very nostalgic about the song as it feels like it pays a nice homage to the early electronic bands before smart phones, when music had more originality than just copying formulas. “Pink Moon” is a song about going for your dreams, finding the spotlight, and honoring your truth. At the same time, it’s also a song that you can just close your eyes and get lost in the stream of your own thoughts.

The drum programming is very gentle and the low end is kept faint, which allows the midranges and hi-end to have as much space as possible in the sound spectrum. The beauty of the song lies in the transitions from the verses that keep Jordana’s performance more scaled back with layers, mainly ad-libs joining her to ultimately set up the epic chorus, where her layered voice and harmonies shine in the mix.

“Pink Moon” is an awesome song from this promising duo that is bringing great songwriting and originality back to electronic singer-songwriting, while also showing off a strong grasp for many throwback sounds. We look forward to what Moon and Aries have in store for the future.
