Night Time /// Low Key Crush

Nightfall is the space between the frenetic realm of day and the restorative land of dreams. In between, there are the reflective hours that arise from the stillness. With the help of an atmospheric and dreamy melody, Australian indie rock duo Low Key Crush’s latest single, “Night Time,” breathes life into this phenomenon that permeates the heart and mind in the midnight hours.

Bandmates Tim Haines and Taycian Lord have crafted an ethereal setting via an acoustic based melody. From the start, you are awash in a meditative sound, which is constructed with tranquil chords. Soon enough, Haines’ pacifying vocals join the fray, adding another calming element to this tune. Eventually, this track’s entire sound becomes a unified, dreamy concept via echoing synth chimes.

Beyond the simple, soothing melody, there is a complex, introspective level where Haines ruminates on his own war between his head and his heart. “I want my heart tonight. I want my heart this bright,” Haines proclaims. After darkness has fallen, he wants himself to shine brightly as possible. However, there is enough room for self doubt with the refrain of “I couldn’t, I wouldn’t.”

While trying to hold on to a flicker of hope, Haines travels down a contemplative path. Reflecting back on “all of the single moments,” he concludes that he’s “lost” himself “into this problem.” Consumed by deconstruction, Haines pleads for his “heart” to be “in line.” Feeling that if he is centered, he can shut out the internal chorus of “I couldn’t, I wouldn’t” once and for all.

“Night Time” captures the experience of how the subtleness of nighttime can spur on profound emotions. Blending together a calming melody and contemplative lyrics, Low Key Crush mixes both into a peaceful, yet brooding composition.
