“Golden Tree” is the new single by indie artist DAAY. They combine rock, jazz, and experimental music to craft a 7:27 minute song. There are classical string instruments featured on the song, as well as saxophone and guitar. The group was created in London in 2019.
This incredible song pushes the boundaries of genre and metaphor, with the “Golden Tree” representing a family tree of the evolution of human consciousness. The roots represent our groundedness, and the branches represent pushing the boundary toward the new and leading edge of consciousness.
The lyrics are descriptive and also dream-like. They transport the listener to a new plane of existence, and the powerful instrumental supports that transportation. “Up high on a golden tree, on a branch beside me, are all the pieces I need,” he sings. The narrator character is living in a whole world inside his mind, and mapping those thoughts in a visual way for the listener is what this song does so well. “In the golden glow, only the angels know, I try to plant my seeds and grow,” he sings.
After describing how these thoughts come to be, the narrator describes the long journey one must take to reach the full potential of these thoughts. “From the cave to the bay, we crawl on our hands and knees and say, we are free again,” he sings. From these lines, one can piece together that the song aims to represent how consciousness itself can be freeing for an individual under the right circumstances.
Alex Barty-King is the founder and main songwriter for DAAY. He has had changes in the supporting band lineup behind him, but currently there are six members. Nathan Ridley is credited with drums and production on “Golden Tree.” The song artwork is a visual representation of the song, and of course features a large gold tree, with small colorful objects hanging from the tree like leaves would.
