Memories are as alluring as the clouds that hang way up in the sky. Both dance upon the peripheries of our fields of vision. However, they are both of a vapory consistency that lets them pass right on through. Los Angeles-based alternative rock project Maejis Mind explores memories in an atmospheric manner with their latest single, “Watch The Rain.” James Beasley, the mastermind behind this project, intertwines the fickle nature of a memory with an immersive melodic experience that plays upon the volatility of the mind and weather alike.
From the jump, Beasley introduces a trancey set up. Combining a dreamy combo of guitar and drums with a downtempo synth, he primes the listener for the deep dive he is about to take them on. This prelude allows you to slip into daydream mode, a place where you can let your mind wander freely without restraint. All of this is crucial to how Beasley ties together the free floating nature of memories and weather. Both can come and go on a whim, but both can produce cloudbursts of their own making.
“I can’t stay here forever,” Beasley sighs, “even though it’s better.” While trapped in a memory, he resigns himself to approaching reality and decides that he “must watch the rain.” Rain becomes a recurring theme with each passing refrain. After wishing “things could be better,” his only move is to “watch the rain.” Via clouds seeded by his own meditation, Beasley is awash in fleeting memories. While he cannot “hide from the pain that’s deep inside,” Beasley acknowledges an oncoming downpour with a final “here comes the rain.”
After the last round of reflection leads to resignation, Beasley picks the perfect time to let out a vast, rollicking melody to conclude this tune. Contemplation meets reality when a thundering, crunchy guitar caps off this grand finale. In the end, “Watch The Rain” comes full circle by exiting the pristine dreamland and entering a turbulent reality.
