Wake Me When It’s Over /// The Heroic Enthusiasts

At first blush, “Wake Me When It’s Over” by The Heroic Enthusiasts casts itself in the role of a mechanized synthscape, featuring a fragmented pulse and cascading chords. Meanwhile, after a newfound, hustling pace unfolds, a set of jagged riffs roar to life after each chorus, signaling a significant departure from its orderly aesthetic. Also, its baseline of sterile synthwave transitions into a futuristic depth consisting of shimmering, digitized accents. While it starts out with the calculating heart of the machine, “Wake Me When It’s Over” is not averse to upgrading beyond its initial programming.

An overarching theme of “Wake Me When It’s Over” centers upon a relationship that’s become stale. Pleas of “show me something, show me something new” beg for a break from the norm. Furthermore, towards its conclusion, there is a deadpan, mini-monologue that begins with “this game just goes in circles” conceding that “we never lose, we never win.” Essentially, a stalemate born out of “deja vu all over again.” However, “Wake Me When It’s Over” isn’t about to opt for the break-up route, but isn’t completely enamored, either.

Altogether, “Wake Me When It’s Over” is a song for living in relationship purgatory where it’s not the worst of circumstances, but still isn’t a place you would rather be. You’re neither here nor there, but you’re lost in the wilderness of it all. Altogether, “Wake Me When It’s Over” is about lingering in limbo and deciding to concede control of this relationship’s collective fate into someone else’s hands.
