Naomi Jane – TACOBELL

‘TACOBELL’ is a wonderfully dynamic pop track that sounds like a balance between an anthem and a ballad. The piano and softness of the intro and verses bring the ballad sounds in, but then the chorus works with an anthem-like chant and more full percussion. One thing that hits in a fun way is that the chorus mentions a marching band, and the drums give a bit of a marching effect. The lyrics tell a story of a high school relationship with fantasy and beauty, but it juxtaposes this with the reality in which rom-coms don’t normally depict real life. For example, the chorus starts with, “If he asked you to prom with the entire marching band / I’d understand why you’d love him,” and ends with, “But he never did any of that.”

Janeuary – Black Into White

“Black Into White” is a gorgeous piano and string track with a somber nature. Overall, piano and violin build the majority of the instrumentation. They’re produced with clarity and give a buzz and resonance that doesn’t fail to be full. Additionally, the vocals have notes that are held beautifully with a bit of a vibration behind them, and they add this brassy tone to make things even more lifelike. There’s something cinematic about the sound this track captures and the dynamics it has. The lyrics use poeticism to capture a tale straight from the emotions, and it tells a story of yearning. It asks another to paint one’s black into white, essentially meaning bringing light into their life.

The Son of God – This Time

‘This Time’ has a sound that’s along the lines of electric indie pop-rock with sounds and a vocal tone with both emo and hip-hop influences. This diverse range of genres pulls together in a cohesive way with crisp production wrapping everything together well. The jump between melody and rap vocals in this track shows a lot of range and keeps things entrancing. Additionally, there is an overarching riff that sounds like a mesh between guitar and synths, and it creates a nice bright bubbliness in the sound. Lyrically, it gets into a story of a life-changing heartbreak that puts destruction in its path.
