As seasons change and musical pallets evolve, tenured Detroit-based indie punk outfit “Marcus: The Apex Predator!” has made it their mission to never let the style of punk truly fall out of vogue. Emboldened by a decade of experience playing together as a band, the group embodies a hardcore style through their lyrics and musicality that genuinely engages and enthralls the senses with every note. As they step into the limelight once again with the release of their latest EP “Newborn Fossil,” they prove to reach new heights with their stylistic commitment throughout, as it captivates from the start through its titular single.
The piece begins with a heavy and resonant electric guitar introduction that quickly sets the tone. As the tune progresses, percussive interludes play to introduce the other instrumentalists one by one, and the world of the music is quickly built around us as the energy intensifies. Before long, the vocals appear in a grumbled and resonant tone, reminiscent of a style that defined the golden age of punk, to begin the narrative as we quickly fall into the thematic intent with the opening line “The marquee like a neon ruse, sonic mission, a collision, a fuse.”
Melodically sensible, yet upbeat in its rhythm, the single hardly gives listeners a moment to catch their breath as it defines itself through a coherent sense of dancibility and motivation. Raw, unique, and full of passion, the record kickstarts this new chapter in the band’s legacy with a bang as it seems to speak straight to the listener’s sense of angst.
