Individually, one of the most difficult tasks can be to let another person into your life. Informed and emotionally scarred by experience, we proceed with extreme caution. Indie rock band Vicious Clay’s new single, “sand lake,” tries to convince someone to let their guard down and imagine a place where they can be emotionally open again. Altogether, “sand lake” chisels away at the walls we build around ourselves.
Sand Lake, the destination laid out on this track, is a remote hideaway that presents the opportunity to let go of your hang-ups. Altogether, it’s about two people on two differing, but historically similar, emotional planes. One side’s journey is nearly full circle, while the other needs a nudge to leave home base. All in all, “sand lake” is about wanting to carve out a place in life where those emotional limitations are null and void.
Melodically, “sand lake” is a tad on the slow burn scale of things. At first, it is a steady dose of wiry chords alongside methodical drums. All in all, it’s upbeat on a sleeper type of level. Altogether, the smooth, melodic current of “sand lake” progresses from slow trickle to babbling brook to rushing river.
One of the recurring lyrics, “just don’t be afraid of the dark now,” speaks volumes about not allowing the reminders of the low times to, inevitably, drag you down. The stillness of the night is when you’re most susceptible, allowing those deep seeded fears and anxieties to run rampant. Altogether, “sand lake” is a song for warding off those malevolent, mental spirits by way of good and understanding company.
