Energy Whores /// Pretty Sparkly Things

Putting words to their deepest feelings and holding a mirror up to the world around them with every track, New York-based electronic rock outfit Energy Whores has never shied away from criticizing the absurdity of many societal norms through their music. With a pristine track record of taking an unapologetic approach to their composition, they continue to blaze trails and define their legacy with every release. Their latest single, Pretty Sparkly Things, only bolsters this reputation as it takes every opportunity to shun the overly consumerist and clout-chasing attributes of our culture that have distracted us from our own happiness.

The piece wastes no time getting to the narrative thesis of the story, as the project’s frontwoman Carrie Schoenfeld sings in a soft, yet resonant voice, “Pretty sparkly things. Watches and rings, shiny bling… If you want them, you can never have them, you’re too poor and sleeping on the floor.” The tempo of the music quickly intensifies, and we feel a sense of enthusiasm to absorb their message through this upbeat tone and danceable melody.

The music not only criticizes the ever-widening gap between the haves and have-nots in our world, but takes aim at our complacency in a system that encourages and promotes the egos of those at the top. Lines like “Celebrities who think their dieties” point out the role they believe entitlement plays in fortifying this tradition.

Having accomplished so much with this latest release, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what could possibly be coming from this artist’s studio next.
