Sdante /// Your Smile Got Me

Broadcasting to the world from Rouen, France, new wave alt-rock artist Sdante has burst onto the scene with an abundance of passion for each song they produce. Developing a particular fondness for style and the proclivities of 2000s music throughout their lifetime, this influence is abundantly present in Sdante’s style of play and compositional structure in countless ways. Incorporating elements of rock, emo, and pop punk into their work, they continue to produce an elating mix of melodic and upbeat refrains and lyrics that embody the artist’s interpretation of the human condition. Their newest single, “Your Smile Got Me,” proves to be an impressive addition to their already robust repertoire as it blends upbeat musicality with thoughtful and melancholy lyrics that culminate in a tonally optimistic, yet lyrically unsugarcoated track.

The piece begins with an eruption of percussive rhythm and electronically embellished accoutrements as we feel the identity of the song becoming clearer with every note. After a few bars, the artist transitions to the narrative core of the track, as they begin their vocals with the opening line “Staring at my phone, hoping you’re gonna text me back.” As the melody grows in complexity and overall energy, we feel for the artist’s position as they tell a story of promises not kept and the lingering questions that follow after adolescent heartbreak.

A modern and unique sound all of its own with a nostalgic undertone that brings a sense of wonder and familiarity to the work, the earworm finds a way to stay with the listener long after every playthrough. Having accomplished so much with their work so quickly, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what could possibly be coming from this artist’s studio next.
