Cupid Spell /// Look Alike

From their home and studio in Bloomingdale, Indiana, dark synthpop duo Cupid Spell has burst onto the scene and garnered substantial attention in a short time. The brainchild of collaborators Josh Kreuzman and Mandy Buffington, the project has immediately defined itself through their use of introspective lyrics set to a beat steeped in melodic sensibility. As they leave the gate with ambitions set high, this week marks a pivotal milestone for the duo as they celebrate the release of their Freshman single, “Look Alike.”

The piece begins as an echoing voice counts them off, and we are immediately thrust into the world of the music as we feel it being built around us in real time. Rhythmic, flowing, and a touch sentimental, the musicality creates a feeling of euphoric elation from the first notes as it reverberates through the listener’s speakers. They quickly get to the narrative thesis of the tune, and soon after, we hear the first lines, “When the angels won’t help you, they’ve all gone away, dreams will guide you to a place you can stay,” sung in a deep baritone tambour.

Defined by lyrics that are so existential, yet so accessible, and an instrumental track that feels nostalgic in its composition, but still modern and unique to this project, the artists have wasted no time in creating a clear identity for this living entity. Having showcased so much of themselves with this first release, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what could possibly be coming out of their minds and studio next.
