Zoë Vera /// Good Enough

Precocious sensation Maria Deirisarri has emerged from a brief recording hiatus and burst back onto the scene with Assertively defining her place within the New Zealand musical community, nuanced indie pop artist Zoë Vera’s work refuses to go unnoticed as she makes her presence known throughout the airwaves. Boldly forging her own path, the pathos of her creative mission feels wholly embodied within the lyrics of her latest single “Good Enough.” Unafraid to express vulnerability in her work, her sense of sentimentality is put on full display within the lyrics of this music as she reflects on her sense of identity growing up as a twin, and the artist’s lifelong journey with comparing her milestones to another at every stage of their life.

A reverberant heartbeat pulsates as introductory percussion to the piece, and we quickly feel drawn into the world the artist creates through their work. A brief piano accompaniment punctuates the bars of the verse, and Vera immediately begins the narrative with the opening line “Was I born with a storm cloud? ‘Cause all I know is pain, now. You were born with the sun loud, guess one had to do proud.”

Channeling a lifetime of adolescent insecurities into the minutes of this track, there is an unmistakable sense of empowerment in the way Vera owns the pages of her own life and chooses to embrace her own sense of self. Steeped in overtones of angst and melancholy, but delivered with a sense of refinement and composure, it feels impossible to not develop a strong connection to the artist’s story as we feel their sense of ambition to accept themself for who they truly are.
