At just 16 years of age, Newbury-born new wave pop artist Ava Valianti has made incredible strides in establishing herself as an artist as she assertively seizes every opportunity she creates for herself. Anchored in reflectively honest storytelling and a proclivity for creating earworm melodies that stay with the listener long after the music has left their speakers, she continues to establish herself as a noteworthy artist with every musical release. Just barely removed from her Sophomore year of high school, Valianti has more than proven her creative abilities as she debuts her latest single, Sophomore Slump, a grounded and lyrically motivated single that has already made waves in the short time since its release.
A warm and energetic instrumental introduction plays to begin the piece, and immediately, we feel the world of this music building around us in real time. Upbeat, yet reserved, we are put in a comforting mood through the musicality as the track takes on a personality of its own. Shortly after, Valanti begins the narrative, and we find ourselves invested in the story from the opening line “Been a pretty shitty summer day. Started out with the play. Tried out for the lead, basically got the goddamn tree.”
A reflection of a point in life that is so authentically personal to the artist, Sophomore Slump shines as a vulnerable and sentimental ballad that mirrors the artist’s interpretation of the human condition. With lyrics that go beyond venting about the insecurities we have all felt at a young age, the track speaks volumes to the anxieties of stagnation at any phase and the urge to grow from every experience.
