Wiltshire singer-songwriter JP Oldfield explores guilt and personal responsibility throughout Saltwater Gospel, a six-track EP that follows a Ferryman who refuses to surrender his dead wife.
His decision sets the story in motion, but the Ferryman’s actions soon create problems beyond his control. As he pursues revenge, he causes further suffering and must face his own part in what follows. The story looks at how grief can influence a person’s judgment and how difficult it can be to accept responsibility for the harm they cause.
Across the EP, the Ferryman’s struggle develops from his refusal to accept his loss to the point where he must confront the results of his choices. Tracks such as “The Preacher’s Noose” and “Further from Heaven” contribute to the wider story, while “Wash Me Away” and “No Rest” explore his guilt and search for forgiveness.
Oldfield wrote all six songs and created the narrative that connects them. His blend of blues, folk and Americana, led by resonator guitar and his deep vocals, gives the EP a consistent sound while allowing the story to develop from track to track
Saltwater Gospel asks what happens when someone believes their suffering gives them the right to punish others. The Ferryman’s journey shows that accepting responsibility is part of facing the past, even when the damage cannot be undone.
