Mud Mice /// Jack Goldstein

Escapism is in our DNA. However, this innate ability is not only reserved for otherworldly voyages of the mind. Sometimes, we don’t have to venture very far to get where we want to be. Captured within a classic country western soundscape, Jack Goldstein’s “Mud Mice” resides at the intersection of romanticizing the notion of pulling up stakes and the pursuit of a sense of belonging. In the middle, “Mud Mice” is an ode to returning to basics with a kindred spirit.

At first, “Mud Mice” leans into the melodic heart of an easy going, country western style with a wavy steel guitar lead-in. Suddenly, clodhopping percussion and jangles usher in the chorus. Finally, an elegant flourish of strings put a bow on this track.

As the world moves forward, we can either adapt or be left behind. But, what if we wanted to step outside the evolutionary tides and into what once was. “Mud Mice” hits pause and makes time for the natural world. In part, it’s about leaving the world behind in favor of a nomadic existence. However, it’s not a solitary, spiritual sojourn into the wild.

All in all, “mud mice” is a term of endearment for companions who share a rustic, minimalist sensibility. Furthermore, “join the ranks of the mud mice fleet” is an open invitation to amass a tribe of like minded souls willing to depart from modernity. On a personal level, “Mud Mice” is about how the journey can draw people closer together because of natural solitude.
