Sometimes, you may wonder if this is all that your life is. Faced with this harrowing prospect, you feel the risk is too great to ignore. However, you may not ever find what you seek. Indie rocker Matt Tarka’s latest single, “Salem,” is about being compelled to search for something greater than what you have, but discovering that change is not automatic.
A consistent, cruising pace defines the sound of “Salem.” For the most part, there’s a workmanlike guitar adding to an even keeled rhythm, save for an edgy buzz that permeates on through. Altogether, “Salem” is a streamlined soundscape resonating on a humble melodic frequency.
In part, “Salem” illustrates how we want more from life than what it has to show us through a metaphorical search for something cosmic. However, all you receive is a fresh breakdown, instead. In addition, nature seemingly wants to withhold its eternal wisdom in the process. All in all, it’s about how we might not find the answers we seek.
All the while, there’s an inner monologue woven into “Salem.” As you reach the fork in the road, you realize your life is unfulfilled. So, you ponder about seeking escapism. But, towards the end, you’re second guessing yourself.
If you have ever felt the need, no matter how great or small, to shake up for your life, “Salem” relates to you on a base level. On this song, Matt Tarka expresses how what comes next isn’t always cut and dry. But, rather, in the soul searching, you find the void remains very much intact.
