Producing their music in Los Angeles, California, new wave electronic outfit The Penumbra Incident has been giving fans all they could ask for with an abundance of music coming from their studio this year. The brainchild of producer and composer Jason Schalow, their music highlights an abundance of present influences over the artist’s three-decade journey through music and creativity. Their musical identity is reflective of the innermost thoughts of the artist, every track they release showcasing itself as a multi-faceted sensory experience as their work proves to push boundaries throughout its verses. Their latest single, “The Architecture of Absence,” proves no different, as it showcases itself as a marquee standout in their already storied repertoire.
The piece begins with a series of embellished string notes, plucking emphatically, yet staccato. Further electronic accouterments fill in soon after to enrich the atmosphere, and we feel the world of this music being built around us in real time. A whispered, yet resonant, voice appears soon after and begins the narrative, as they speak the opening line, “Every dream is with your silhouette, the ghost I love. I built a cathedral out of glances.”
Hypnotic in its rhythmic tone, the single proves euphoric, putting listeners in a state of trance with its musicality and delivering lines that read like poetry. We feel a sense of depth and layered composition throughout the tune that invites curiosity through the mystery it creates. Having accomplished so much with this latest release, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what could possibly be coming from this artist’s studio next.
