When life presents an opportunity for change, it is advantageous to discover who the new you could be. But, by shedding the old you, there’s an unknown that remains before you. Alt-rock outfit Indoor Friends ponders the idea of identity on their new single, “Where I’m Going.” Although it’s not without a dose of uncertainty, this latest track by the Boston-based band remains committed to finding a new sense of self.
First, “Where I’m Going” packs a punch from the very start, re-emerging with the raucous energy of its chorus. At times, there are comparatively quieter stretches, carried by rumbling drums pacing one of this track’s contemplative stints. Before long, the familiar frenzy of the chorus roars back. Finally, sirens of riffs and rapid fire drums coalesce into this track’s grand finale.
Mirroring how intense this track starts out, “Where I’m Going” cuts to the chase by dropping its chorus into a leading role. As a result, there’s an instant anthemic energy. All in all, it’s about making a life decision that’s characterized more like a journey.
Meanwhile, “Where I’m Going” expresses doubts of becoming your own person. Also, it’s about contending with how you’ve neglected yourself in the past. Eventually, there’s a new sense of resolve. By the end, “Where I’m Going” invites a level of hardship. It’s a parting message of don’t shy away from the pain that life may bring.
When the calendar flips, there’s a need to believe in a new year, new you mindset. In reality, change is gradual, not an instant transition. On “Where I’m Going,” Indoor Friends search for a new identity, but recognize how difficult life changes can be.
