Bailey Tomkinson’s ‘When The Lights Went Out’ is a stunning pop-country and Americana-inspired track. Hailing from St. Ives, Cornwall, the songstress is known for her authentic and hooky sound and lyrical storytelling. She fuses the genres of surf rock, Americana, and pop in her music, and is moving the ‘Kernowfornia’ sound front and center. With influences including Taylor Swift, Kacey Musgraves, and Sheryl Crow, Tomkinson is certainly an artist to watch.
‘When The Lights Went’ out starts off with a smooth pop intro, leading into Bailey Tomkinson’s first verse. The drums and bass kick in mid-way through the first verse, giving it a fun, upbeat sound. Tomkinson’s vocals are a standout, with a strong, folky voice comparable to 70’s singers such as Stevie Nicks. The chorus brings in synth and a dance pop sound alongside vulnerable lyrics. “But you were never mine/And I never got over that/Now my lights go out/When I think of you,” sings Tomkinson in the chorus.
According to Tomkinson, “When The Lights Went Out is a song about those times when you think you’re in a relationship but the other party doesn’t.” Tomkinson masterfully paints a picture of what this situation feels like through her lyricism and emotionally charged vocals.
