Foxy Panic is a Los Angeles based pop duo that is making refreshing and creative music right now. “Chains” is about getting reckless and going past your comfort zone. Musically, it’s a song you can blast for a dance floor, a drive, or while multi-tasking as it’s not tied down to a specific tone and setting. Overall, this song needs to be heard.
“Chains” captures a blend of all those genres and more with its nostalgic vocal deliveries reminiscent of indie rock, deep house synths, and pop sensibilities in the composition. There’s a lot of creative work happening with the vocals in both the layering, the effects, and the ad-libs. The vocals are definitely the main focus of the song, but it successfully achieves its demanding quality with the great mix of having the rhythmic synths never overbearing through the frequency ranges, and the four on the floor drums are able to maintain the groove without having to come off as obnoxious. What is really appreciated is the change of the drums from the first verse to the hook so the whole track isn’t shackled to the four on the floor beat. You can hear the thoughtfulness behind the songwriting.
The mix is really professional and allows for an interesting and versatile dynamic range. Each section always brings a new element to the song, never resulting in coming off as repetitive or mundane. The midway point of the song combines many creative vocal mixes with the pitch shifts, the eq’d and filtered vocals, ultimately all allowing the instrumental to shine at the very enjoyable bridge that is both funky and danceable, appropriate for any venue worthy of human feet stepping on it. Along with all its strong qualities exists the ethereal nature of the choice of sounds used on the song. The tone is reminiscent of the good electronic bands of the early 2000’s that you could hear in French cafes or lounges across the globe.
“Chains” is awesome and we’re really excited about what’s next for the L.A. pop duo. Definitely check them out.
