Ideally, we are all capable of becoming masters of our own destinies. However, if the last few years have shown us anything, even the best laid plans are written in chalk rather than ink. If anything, our ability to control things is finite at best. Brooklyn, New York based singer-songwriter Billy Cadden takes on his ability to stay in control of his personal life with his latest single, “One In Control.”
While Cadden mulls over a series of details with a fine tooth comb, the melody is nowhere near as painstakingly constructed. It is a simple, dreamy guitar laden sound that is accented by the click and clack of drums. It provides a necessary contrast from the internal tug of war Cadden is playing. On one side, this song is backed by a sound that does not have a care in the world. On the other side, there is uncertainty and doubt ruling the roost.
The root cause of Cadden’s doubt starts with deciphering social cues. “Is there meaning past a smile?” he asks. Cadden is racking his brain on whether a smile is more than just for appearances. He cannot control what a smile means because it is beyond himself. It is an outward appearance with a multitude of definitions.
Eventually, when Cadden finds himself back home in an intimate situation, more self-doubt emerges. From the superficial “mess” of his home to the collective rust from a lengthy layoff in his social life, he is spiraling from every angle. With his head swimming in a flood of doubt, Cadden is treading water.
We cannot control everything. “One In Control” is an example of how it is impossible to maintain absolute control. Instead, focus on simplicity like this song’s melody provides.
