Alycee is a producer from Germany who is producing great atmospheric electronic music that encompasses great songwriting sensibilities as well as production techniques. “What Do You Dream” is more proof that Alycee is a producer that should be demanding your attention.
Alycee has shared that “What Do You Dream” is a tune about the feeling of levitating in a relationship while having questions about your partner’s intentions. The instrumental has lush 80s like synth chords that are layered with panning chimes, creating a sense of levity to the track. The lead vocals are performed by Tine, another German artist who co-wrote the song. Tine delivers a very solid performance, owning a beautiful voice with a timbre that fits really well within the sound spectrum of Alycee’s production. Ultimately, it allows for a great creative marriage for the song.
The automation and modulation of the synths throughout the song create a cool dynamic range, lending variance between the verses and hook. Rhythmically, the bass and drums compliment each other really well and the tune demands your patience as the beat progresses and lands fully only until after the first verse when the opening hook begins. The bass then pulsates aggressively as the hook enters a second half where the drums perform their busiest loop.
Lyrically, the song goes through a nice progression. Arriving at a feeling of gratefulness. Lyrics of knowing that you’re not drowning, reflecting on what you dream of when you’re in a nice space of intimacy with your partner is a refreshing take on ‘love songs’. Because no experience is ever completely mutual, the song begs the question if the other person is having the same dreams and feelings of affection too.
Alycee and Tine have delivered a strong track that has radio appeal, but can also embrace its own creative take on a single with sprinkles of indie expression and innovative songwriting. We look forward to hearing what’s next from the German producer.
