Daya Hendrix is a pop/r&b artist who has brought us an upbeat, fun single that feels like a celebration of life. With a neat dance beat and a great vocal performance, Daya Hendrix is sure to make you move with “onmyway.” Daya has shared that she wants to produce as much music as possible and reinvent her sound. Sharing that sound on stage is what truly makes her happy and it’s hard not to feel happiness as a listener with this record.
The introduction begins with a slow filter build, as a radio DJ gives us a preamble into the sonic world we are about to enter. The single combines r&b with garage and the indie house dance hall music of the 90s. Daya Hendrix is able to gracefully lay her talented voice throughout the track as the subtle drumbeat creates a groove that is a refreshing change from over the top instrumental beats coming from the dance scene these days. The piano chords driving the tune alongside the bass allow Daya’s voice to be the main focal point of the record. Layered horn licks never hurt, providing a nice classy intimacy to exist within the song.
Lyrically, the record submits to letting go of trying hard by learning to flow with life. It’s Daya’s vocal range, harmonics, and layers that really thrive throughout the tune. There’s no denying her talent as a vocalist. Compositionally, the dynamics of the production continue to build throughout the song. There are great sections where it’s just a hi-hat, piano, and Hendrix’s voice. These choices allow the hook to feel big when it does hit. The sonics really thrive in the transitions between the pre-choruses to the hook, ultimately showing Daya’s strength as a songwriter and sensibilities to pop structures.
