The Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Semler has a new EP, “Stages of a Breakdown.” The multi-talented artist’s latest EP delves into Semler’s thoughts and feelings during their loss of a longtime friendship due to the friend’s anti-queer religious thoughts. Consisting of five hard-hitting tracks, “Stages of a Breakdown” is a brave (not to mention catchy) EP with emotive lyrics of love, loss, and heartbreak.
The five tracks on the EP, “You’re Not My Friend,” “Don’t Tell Anyone,” “Twenties,” “Raise Up,” and “Outro,” all encompass a different stage in Semler’s learning to accept their loss of a friendship.
The track “Don’t Tell Anyone” is a dream-pop song with lyrics from the friend’s perspective who is distancing themselves. Beginning with the lyrics “Don’t Tell Anyone” in an electronic voice, the genre-bending track effortlessly switches from dream pop to electronic to indie rock within its entirety. With lyrics, “You don’t want to be the reason we are asked to leave; you’re not the only one who’s losing sleep” and “I’m sorry you’re mad; why do you have to run your mouth like that” showcases the friend’s saddened but confused feelings about how they feel, yet what they think they “have” to do because of the anti-queer religious sentiment.
Selmer has had an excellent last couple of years; their 2021 EP, “Preacher’s Kid,” landed the #1 spot on the iTunes Christian music charts. In October 2021, Semler landed the #1 spot again with their EP “Late Bloomer.” With this steady growth, meaningful lyrics, and catchy melodies, Selmer is destined for success.
