Izzy Skinner’s ‘I Used To Know This Guy’ is a captivating track from an even more captivating new album, ‘Haunting’!
‘I Used To Know This Guy’ moves forward softly with a soft percussive beat and a violin bounce. There’s something unique about the way Skinner uses strings as a part of the percussion but also has an overlying drawn-out violin at times. Additionally, the vocals are delivered with a soft rasp and somber tone. Overall, this track is a great display of the wide range of sounds indie-folk can deliver. Lyrically, it seems to tell the story of a relationship that soured in a hometown that’s long gone. It lingers on a mix between the emptiness of the town and the meanness of the ‘guy’ as referenced in the title, and it develops itself as an emotional story.
Izzy Skinner grew up studying violin and performing it as the concertmaster of several school groups, and she has been part of the Little Yarra Ensemble which has several CDs and frequently tours. From there, she continued studying music and is soon getting her master’s in composition at the Australian Institute of Music. Skinner has a rich history and music that lends to the experimentation and unique sounds she creates today. Her music is already captivating, and it’s exciting to know that she’s studying to grow even more moving forward!
