LE!GHTON is a London based electronic pop artist who draws inspiration from artists like Louis Cole, Rag’N’Bone, and Adele. “Not Today” has a great, tasteful, and funky groove that combines a classy bassline with a great top end of layers of LE!GHTON’S vocals. Fusing synth pads with an organic sounding rhythm section, LE!GHTON delivers a strong vocal performance that glues the entire piece together for an enjoyable number.
“Not Today” is an empowering number about not letting anyone slow you down. The hook has a great up-tempo feel that is arranged well with electric guitars and nicely crafted synth programming. The synth pads are dreamy, but add a nice contrast to the electro-funk feel that drives the song. LE!GHTON really boasts her vocal prowess when delivering the line, “storm left me astray.” As the track progresses, it’s hard to deny her impressive range.
The bridge before the last hook adds a nice ballad-esque break, creating space for LE!GHTON to openly share that she’s ready to confront her fears. It adds a nice dynamic range and variety to the timbre of the tune, ultimately providing a satisfying end. For anyone who likes honest lyrics juxtaposed with an energetic and well produced instrumental, “Not Today” is able to pack that formula in at just under three minutes.
“Not Today” is full of empowerment and claiming your ground, while still adding originality to this type of tune we’ve heard before. I look forward to what else LE!GHTON has in store going forwards.
