Northern Lights /// Colourshop

Colourshop is a one man band, Alfredo Salvati is an Italian singer/songwriter, who now lives in London. According to the biography page on his website, he draws influence from Neil Young and Tracy Chapman.

The entire song features just the acoustic guitar accompanying the solo male vocals. After seeing the song cover, the listener realizes that the song takes place in the wilderness somewhere. Out in the woods or nature, the character takes a journey to see the northern lights, which is an attraction for people to travel to the northern Canadian wilderness.

This song could be considered Folk Pop, the guitar plays a melody while plucking chords to go along with the progression. The lyrics discuss the journey, and how these trips in life can be metaphoric for our own lives. “New routes are sometimes more difficult to find. It’s yourself you might find when you try,” he sings.

His voice mostly stays in the middle vocal register, but he does hit high notes during the chorus. The guitar alternates between following the vocals, or playing something different but still complimentary.

There is a challenge to taking a trip like this. “The road is not in any map I know. But that’s what is called discovery” he sings. The last couple lines are repeated at the end of the song, ”Tell me is it that different, I might be just another entanglement.” This line leaves a universal message at the end of the song, that can be interpreted differently for each listener, to connect to their own lives.
