Not Good Enough /// Noam Wolf

One of the pitfalls of life is comparing yourself to others around you. It is an impossible standard that may leave you questioning your own standing. Because, no matter how you think you stack up, you will fall into the trap of a mythical margin that you feel the need to overcome. “Not Good Enough,” the latest single by Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Noam Wolf, is a poignant take on identity and self-worth.

“Just not good enough. Almost there. But not where I wish to be.” This is the middling place where Wolf finds herself. She is somewhere between the valley and the peak of the mountain. Far enough up the hill to see how far she has traveled, but dismayed with the steep climb towards the summit. Right out of the gate, there is a palpable melancholy that flows from her voice.

“Why can’t I just be? Why can’t I just be? Can’t be myself.” A question of identity is at the core of Wolf’s refrain. Her sense of self is lost. It is not something you can physically misplace, but it seems to be easily forgotten.

Following suit, the melody plants itself into the aforementioned middle ground. The collective of drums and guitar don’t leap out to greet the listener. Instead, they serve as a soundtrack to Wolf’s brooding, inner monologue.

For most of its run, this tune emphasizes the sense of resignation that Wolf puts forth. However, the melody finally lets off steam at the very end. For a brief moment, the mood livens up to an outburst of exasperation.

Noam Wolf’s “Not Good Enough” is a wrenching rendition about finding your bearings among the shifting tides of the self. While it centers on an elusive grasp on identity, this tune has found its own unique voice. This song speaks to those who are struggling in a way that lets them know that they are not alone.
