Turpentine /// Nathaniel Paul

The last we heard from Nathaniel Paul, the singer-songwriter was adrift in a “Bitter Melody.” Now, his latest single, “Turpentine,” ventures down a dream pop laden path. Yearning to be free from a methodical life, Paul serves up an easy listening, existential tune.

With a smooth blend of guitar, synth and drums, Paul lays the groundwork for a free flowing, atmospheric melody. At large, it is a calming influence on an, otherwise, contemplative tune. Steady as it goes, this meditative sound plays right into Paul’s hands as the backdrop for a collection of deep musings.

At the start, Paul describes himself as being akin to a mass produced automaton that’s rolled off of the “assembly line.” However, a defect of being “filled with turpentine” serves to jam up his inner workings. Instead of a natural life blood, his system is rendered sluggish.

After being rendered non-functional, Paul has one simple request: “Can’t someone help me get back on my feet again?” This pulls on the existential thread of being able to “dream of a better life.” But, first, Paul recognizes that knowledge is power, conceding that “first I got to learn what I need to know.” Meanwhile, the tranquility of his vocals help to influence the reigning calm this tune aims for.

By comparing “Turpentine” and “Bitter Melody,” Paul excels at setting an easy going tone. Both of which are chill without becoming aloof. “Turpentine” builds off of the low key vibes of “Bitter Melody” and churns out a deep, thoughtful tune.
