Dispensing with the emo-laden rock sound from their previous single, “No You Won’t,” Reno, Nevada’s Split Persona have returned with a straightforward, hard rock cut entitled “I Need More.” With a grittier edge, the band unleashes a blitz of razor sharp bass, guitar and drums designed to cut right to your core with dynamic precision. At its heart, this single is unapologetically brash and unwavering in its ability to bring the ruckus with full authority.
At times, there is a prevailing industrial sound on this track. It’s not industrial in terms of the cold, mechanical sub-genre of rock with the same name. But, there are hints of a workmanlike melody in that you can imagine gears clicking and grinding in clockwork fashion inside of a complex contraption. This auditory illusion is provided by the tinny collaboration of bass, guitar and drums that complete the steely theme.
Lead singer Zander Hoschak provides a much needed, defiant snarl with his vocals. “Even if I wanted to change,” he proposes, “we’ll do this all again anyway.” What’s captured in this exchange is the recognition of a continuous cycle that promises to be difficult to snap. In this case, it is an unrelenting lifestyle of hard partying. Fittingly enough, this song’s rallying cry of “I need more” is indicative of how being under the influence creates an insatiable need that is difficult to shake.
What the listener cannot shake off is the raucous mood that Split Persona supplies them with. “I Need More” is a rushing torrent of raw sound that sweeps you up in its volatile nature. Instead of dialing back, Split Persona has hit right back with another bout of sheer, intense rock.
