Part of what we see in each other is a form of projection. We see what others want us to see. All the while, we construct an image of what we perceive about relatively perfect strangers. The Trusted’s latest single, “The Lightning,” explores falling for the idea of someone, but separating from the superficial and discerning what makes them tick.
From afar, people are more hypothetical than they are actualized within your mind’s eye. However, the closer you get, the clearer they become. At first, there’s the invisible social bubble of being “in high demand,” which is an effect of one’s own perception of another’s status. However, it turns into becoming enamored with someone with an inflated sense of self-importance. Also, there’s an observable narcissistic streak that also exports “sad sounds” to convey a semblance of emotional depth. Altogether, “The Lightning” encompasses the simplicity of falling in awe and the complexity of discovering what someone is really all about.
Initially, there’s a subtle serenity about “The Lightning” that’s only slightly impacted ever so emphatically by hints of percussion. The occasional, twinkling synth accents help this track play it coy. Eventually, when the chorus hits, everything becomes a bit more elevated into a shimmery whirlwind of sorts. Altogether, “The Lightning” exists in a place of pop rock nirvana.
All in all, “The Lightning” is about peeling back the layers of social and emotional make-up, revealing the ultimate sum. After all that’s discovered, “The Lightning” crunches the numbers and comes out with a net positive in their mind.
