Westwell – Don’t forget to leave the light on
‘Don’t forget to leave the light on’ starts with simple acoustic strumming and soft baritone vocals. From the get-go, it stands out as being clearly produced and mixed. Then, more guitars are added which fit into the mix in a way that still helps everything stand out. Eventually, there are pianos, a soft percussive drive, and even a violin. The sound goes quickly from simple to full, and though the energy rises it keeps a well-tempered pace. It has a love ballad song, which resounds through the lyrics which are more than lovey. It tells the story from the eyes of someone who has been away from a lover, seemingly for a long time. Overall, it shows a sense of yearning, paints vivid imagery, and tells that whom has been away will be home soon. This track is part of a beautiful and cohesive 5 track EP of the same name.
Makaio Huizar – Town
‘Town’ projects itself in sound and lyrics as true deep melancholy. It stands out as an emo-influenced pop track with a hyper-drawn-back tempo and a lot of emotion. The instrumentation mainly works with synths that hold for long times, resounding in the space. Then the bass beats hit slowly with a piano-like tone. Vocally, it’s somber and soft, and there’s a rawness in their production. The reverberation in the instrumentation and softness of the vocals is gut-wrenching with the hurt they express. Additionally, the lyrics jump around a lot, but they express a deep state of pain. It expresses a deep disdain for the space the voice is in and begs to get out; to get an escape.
