Richmond, Virginia-based indie pop sensation Erin & The Wildfire have emerged from the studio with their latest release to the joy of their fans across the world. A project known for taking an unabashed approach to their lyrical writing and subject matter, they have truly outdone themselves time after time with their work. Their newest single “Shapes in the Clouds” comes at a poignant time of the year. As we prepare to come home for the holidays and get ready to navigate conversations of personal weight between our friends and family who might not share our beliefs, the track addresses the uncomfortable space around sharing so little in common in our beliefs with those who mean so much to us.
The piece begins with an elation of upbeat introjection from the instrumentals as the vocals simultaneously appear to begin the narrative with the opening line “You buy me books on business and stars. Want you to look straight into my heart, but you and I are missing the joy. For me, the honesty feels like a choice.”
Delivered in an optimistic tone, we feel a sense of comfort in the musicality and an added motivation to see the message of this music from the artists’ point of view. The danceability of the tune allows us to take the message in at face value and offers listeners deep insight into the philosophical beliefs the artists hold. While others’ expectations of us might feel overwhelming at times, we will always have the choice to retain control of our own autonomy as we take charge of our own lives.
