This round-up is for anyone looking for tales and emotions shared from a feminine perspective. Here are 5 tracks by women to keep an eye on.
Ava Valianti – Wishing Well
‘Wishing Well’ benefits from crisp production and a well-placed mix for its emotional beauty to shine through. The focal point of the track is definitely the vocals with their fullness, dynamic sound, and emotion. They stand out as they bounce and weave between mid-tones and higher tones. That being said, the acoustic guitar-based instrumentation is a perfect background, and the way its different layers are mixed fills the sound well. Also, the synths and electric guitar sounds scattered about keep things interesting and are produced well over the acoustic basis. The lyrics in this track capture the emotion that comes with growing up and how much it affects the self. But, it captures the feeling of holding onto youth with the lyric “I still believe in magic and I still believe in ghosts.”
Lachi – A Girl
“A Girl” is another song where the vocals stand out. They’re full and dynamic, and the way they’re mixed and layered fills things well. Each vocalist included has a lot to add in terms of harmony and fullness. The instrumentation is a moderate-paced group of strings with bongos as percussion. The way this instrumentation is used lets the vocals take the foreground and gives them their space to shine. In the instrumentation, one of the high points is the cello as it fills the sound with beauty. Overall, this is gorgeous, and the orchestral sound blends well with the pop influences. Lyrically, it tells a poignant tale about the difficulties that come from what it’s like being a woman in modern society. It rings true and relatable as it captures a realistic picture of the intersection between culture and struggle.
Naomi Jane – Press Send
“Press Send” is a synthy pop track with a bouncy piano, buzzy bass, and soft percussion. Overall, it takes on a tone that’s easy to vibe to. On top of that, the dynamics between sections keep it enjoyable throughout, but it remains catchy, especially in the chorus. One thing that’s done well is the energy, it’s exciting and full of life but does well with the pacing. It hits that intersection between exciting and emotional well. Additionally, the vocals have a punchiness at times that adds to making it an absolute bop, and there is a good dash of acoustic sounds. This track is about finding the courage to pull out of a relationship filled with toxicity and pain. It plays well with the emotion and power that it takes to finally get away from something that isn’t healthy.
JAN-JAN – Pieces
‘Pieces’ is an emo-inspired hyperpop anthem. The vocals especially dash in that emo sound with a bit of a mumble, but they’re still delivered with clarity. Additionally, they work with a punchy flow, and the instrumentation is bass-driven but filled with a rush of percussive drive. It hits with a lot of energy, but it still is dynamic in the flow of that energy. The end hits with even more of a hyperpop tone as autotune is used to make the vocals sound more electronic. The lyrics capture teenage angst and what it’s like to have a crush, have no money, and fall apart over and over again. It’s about trying to relate to another that one is interested in but is unsure the connection will land. The chorus works a lot with repetition in the right ways, making things catchy and repeatable.
Disio – You’re One from a Million
“You’re One from a Million” works with electronic-sounding vocals and instrumentation that capture the Christmas spirit. The vocals have an AI sound, but they work with a lot of punch and emotion. The flow of the instrumentation has an optimistic bounce with a piano basis, but like the vocals, it has a bit of an electronic sound. This sound is benefitted by the 808 bass-drive. The thing about it that’s the most heartfelt is the lyrics. It basically shares that though Christmas is beautiful, what makes it more beautiful is the ability to spend it with a lover.
