LunaRover’s debut single ‘Chimera’ is here to prove that stellar music can be made at home by a band that’s fresh on the scene.
‘Chimera’ is a psychedelic-influenced synth-pop track that blends sounds old and new to make something unique and dreamy. The instrumentation seems to slide around the basis of a synth tone that slides in and fades out smoothly for much of the track, and the higher-toned synths that find their way into the foreground give a bit of an 80s twang. Though it isn’t vaporwave, there’s an aspect of that sound to it, such as how different sounds rest in the mix in terms of loudness and softness. Additionally, the vocals build into that dreamy tone as they have a breathiness, and they also find a way to deliver a higher pitch with smoothness and clarity. Also, there are a couple of moments with a sax that utilizes reverb, and it brings a nice groove into things. The lyrical lines blend storytelling and poeticism to explore a fleeting relationship that found its end. They give a sense of introspection and explore good emotions that couldn’t stay.
LunaRover is a Silver Spring, Maryland-based duo consisting of musicians Ben Pelletier and Kevin Rieth. They make synthy alternative pop and are co-producers as they toss ideas to each other to create cohesive pieces. ‘Chimera’ also benefitted from the drum work of Tench Tillman and the saxophone skills of Artem Zhulyev, which shows a focus on collaboration. This is a strong release, especially for a debut, so that skill is sure to shine through in future releases.
