Love, Emotion, and Nostalgia – A Round-Up of Resonance

This round-up has a lot to explore. Its main core rests along the lines of love and yearning, but it explores deeper emotions in a lot of ways. Additionally, it has a lot of introspection and nostalgia. These 5 fresh tracks are sure to get you in your head in one way or another.

Nothing Like Robots – booty calls

‘booty calls’ is an atmospheric indie synth pop punk piece with a great melody and gorgeous sonics. The electric sound to this track resounds even through the vocals due to the way they’re produced. The sound is full, and the drums stand out with a powerful rhythmic drive. The dark growl of the bass follows suit, and in general, there’s a lot of distortion in the music that gives it a heavier tone. It lyrically goes into a modernized version of dating, with the main voice expressing a need for another on the phone. It expresses needing this subject to help them feel good and escape struggle. When the title of the track is dashed in, there’s something a bit tongue-in-cheek about the way it’s written.

ROTUNES – Get Me High

‘Get Me High’ uses an 80s take in its synths with more modernized and theatrical vocals. The Bass synths have a bit of a slap to them and play back and forth with the electronic drums well. Then, the brighter synths have a buzziness. Using 80s and modern sounds, this track creates something a bit vaporwave. It has that dash of nostalgia, but it’s also freshened up with modern influences. The vocals have beautiful harmonies, and they hit some crazy notes with power. They’re super dynamic and catchy, and there’s a bit of a scat in some of the harmonies. The lyrics seem to detail a missed chance to see a loved one, that subject’s love being so good it gets the main narrator high.

Shakkalo – Die Alive

‘Die Alive’ takes things to a softer and slower vibration. The vocals have this sweet and smooth alto sound, and guitars form the basis with some atmospheric synths and simple percussion. This one has a lot of atmosphere that’s dashed with tons of emotion. The atmosphere builds a sense of introspection as the vocals have a softness. The lyrics express a deep yearning, wanting to feel the warmth of another, but a knowledge that the warmth can’t be shared. Tears roll down the cheeks as there’s a drive toward another but a deep disconnect, likely due to mental health.

Rodney Hazard – Motions

‘Motions’, if there was one word to describe it, is intriguing. It’s a bit experimental, heavy in base, and filled with atmosphere. It’s extremely dreamy, and the way the vocals are produced into the music gives them a faded sound that works in the context of the overall piece. The lyrics use repetition, but the way it’s used seems to build a sense of introspection. This track is here to get listeners in their heads while taking them on a sonic journey. It’s dreamy and different, but the dynamic flow between sections is astounding. The lyrics repeat “going through the motions,” which gives a lot to think about, especially in tandem with the instrumentation.

Paul David – Gotta Rewind Myself

‘Gotta Rewind Myself’ takes things in a different direction. It has a warm and optimistic sound with jazzy overtones, the slap of the bass bouncing around the instrumentation. There are also trumpets and other brassy instruments, giving things a nice warm buzz. The vocals are delivered with a snappy pace, with some good melody but hit right with their rhythm. This track is great with its rhythm, and the instrumental starting at about 01:45 has some great guitar in the foreground. At one point in Star Wars, Yoda tells Luke that he must unlearn the things he has already learned. Lyrically, this track takes this concept and makes it an anthem of nostalgia, having to rewind to the past to refind one’s shine.
