Hevs Journey just released her new single ‘Why I Cry’ today! Here’s an exploration of that release and three more tracks that are loaded with emotion.
Hevs Journey – Why I Cry
‘Why I Cry’ is a heartfelt and emotional pop track from a young up-and-coming musician. The first thing of note in this track is that it’s crisply produced. The guitar has a nice flick to it, and the vocals have a full soul. The production allows these distinct aspects to stand out and hit the right punches. Lyrically, this is the track that captures the end of a relationship as one’s partner starts to change and not connect in the same way. The chorus has a great hook that goes, “Crazy thoughts runnin’ through my mind / You used to be my ride or die / Never thought you’d be the one to make me cry.” The songwriting overall delivers on the emotional front.
NEZZY – i’m feeling ok
‘i’m feeling okay’ has a softness that overarches the entire track. The acoustic guitar pulls things along well with atmospheric synths for most of the track, and despite the softness, the pickups have enough energy and dynamics to keep things exciting. The vocals have a rasp and breathiness to them that works with a lot of emotion. The main hook of the lyrics follows the title of the track, but the sound gives it a twang that suggests it may be more deeply emotional than that. The rest of the lyrics seem to express an interest in another and a worry that that person may change their mind about returning that interest.
Karly C – Dreaming About You
‘Dreaming About You’ has that pop idol energy but is delivered with a sense of genuineness. What stands out about this track the most is its pure and honest feelings. The vocals have a smoothness at times and a tad of a growl at others, and overall they work with an emotional twang throughout. Instrumentally, the mix is great, allowing different synths and the drums to stand out in clarity. The lyrics in this track tell the story from the perspective of someone in love. But they know the object of their affection isn’t into their type, as they don’t try to fit modern standards.
ChiodoSupply – The Reckoning
‘The Reckoning’ from album 1919 is a folk-country track with a well-held pacing that’s kept by a guitar with full baritone vocals over. The acoustic guitar definitely holds the drive, and there’s a bass that cuts in at times with slow long-held notes. Also, a piano is introduced around 01:20 before a pickup into a more full sound. In general, different instrumental attributes come and go to control the color and dynamics of the track. The vocals do well at bending around, and there’s a bit of a brassy undertone to them. The lyrics tell the story of a reckoning, in which the narrator must take justice into their own hands.
