Moments come and go and all that remain are the memories. However, a memory is when the present retires from your senses. “Solstice Sun,” co-released between Nick Byrne and Tom Symmonds, finds little comfort in memory. Instead, this introspective folk track finds its way toward staying in the moment.
At first, “Solstice Sun” explores reveling in the simplicity of the moment. Concurrently, the acoustic soundscape becomes delicate with a touch of plucky notes and meditative via its understated drum beat. However, the narrative steps aside into a “sepia daydream” or the spark of a memory in your mind’s eye. Also, it’s a nostalgia effect that softens up the mental image of a space in time. However, this amber hue of bygone happiness coincides with a subconscious fear of losing that joy in the here and now.
In part, the final chorus of “Solstice Sun” contrasts feeling insecure with allowing yourself to feel present. At first, it’s about seeking reassurance against your doubts. In turn, it’s about feeling revitalized and restored by the natural promise of a new day’s “everglow.” At the same time, a fluttering symphonic accompaniment gradually ushers its way in. It’s more along the lines of a subtle style of grandeur. Altogether, “Solstice Sun” wraps up on an optimistic note.
The weight of the moment has a habit of overcomplicating experience. Eventually, the lesson of “Solstice Sun” becomes one of realizing tomorrow doesn’t mean the end of what today meant. It’s about changing your daily outlook on life for the better. All in all, “Solstice Sun” is about giving tomorrow a chance to be great, if not greater, than today.
