Reflection /// Fourmarks

We analyze, dissect and parse every fragment of our dreams. As a result, we dilute our subconscious manifestations with cold, rational science. Perhaps, we should accept our dreams for what they are: an escape from reality. A blend of dancey and moody atmospherics, Fourmarks’ new synthy rock single, “Reflection” delves into the transportive nature of dreams and the meta-physicality thereof.

On the nature of dreams, “Reflection” hints at how they act as another level of consciousness, separating the mind and body from each other. In part, it’s about transcending yourself in favor of another plane of existence. In addition, the chorus reinforces the idea that dreams are infinite in their physics. For example, “I know a place we can dance…trip through time and space…and then back to the start” speaks to how a dream can become a subconscious retreat from the real world.

At first, “Reflection” opens with bubbling synth, deft bass, hints of reverb and the occasional, sleek guitar squeal. Along the way, a building, swift pace infuses a slightly more frenetic, yet composed, energy into the soundscape. For a moment, the sonic clouds part, revealing a pins and needles combo of chords. Switching between a moody current and a subtle, dancey vibe, “Reflection” isn’t happy-go-lucky, but isn’t entirely resigned to the doldrums either.

On a certain level, “Reflection” is about distancing yourself from reality. The most natural way of separating mind and body is through our dreams. Altogether, “Reflection” is a song for reveling in the refuge of our minds, giving in to the abstract properties of this realm, at large.
