Modern day torchbearers of the Bay Area’s storied creative community, Oakland-based outfit Omnesia has emerged onto the scene with a passion that refuses denial. Seizing every opportunity they make for themselves, the anticipation surrounding their upcoming full-length album “OMNESIA: Future Vintage” can be felt by their immediate fanbase and beyond as they build suspense and tease its latest single, “Heroes + Legends.” An album steeped in sentimental and poignant reflections of the world they see around them, the collection’s emotional heart can be felt in this standout track. With the lyrics and visuals coming from a collection of artists anchored in their support of the LGBTQIA+ community, the single and accompanying music video serve as their robust protest against president Trump’s actions against those who identify as queer or transgender.
As the piece begins, strong electronic embellishments immediately identify the mood cultivated by the music as we feel the world of the song being built around us in real time. The word “Freakshow” is repeated throughout the introduction and we sink deeper into the ambiance with every bar.
Lyrically reflective of the movement they support, lines like “Don’t gawk, it’s not a sideshow. It’s what’s inside us, not a circus” embody their deepest feelings of a world that has seemed to normalize hate against their identity. Refusing to accept this status quo, their work takes on an empowering theme in its rhetoric, juxtaposing this with lines like “Never fear, the freakshow is here. We freaks are heroes and legends standing our ground.”
Having accomplished so much with this latest release, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what these artists could have coming down the pipeline next.
