Mary Milton has captured a realistic depiction of loss in her brand new release, ‘On My Shoulder’. It came out yesterday, Feb 13, 2026.
‘On My Shoulder’ is a gorgeous and haunting release that tackles the idea of loss in a poignant way. It was written about the death of Mary’s father, and the very opening is a voicemail of his, a message from the past. The synths in the background have a softness to them, and the vocals do really well at carrying the work. The backing harmonies fill out the piece well, and the primary vocals have a lot of emotion. It’s paced softly and slowly, which helps to put a lot of focus on the narrative and flow of things.
The vocals taking such a foreground capture so much passion and love, and it helps to deliver the narrative. This track is one of pain, forgiveness, and moving forward with no chance to say goodbye. Loss is a difficult thing to cope with in any capacity, and this track captures the weight that it has. That being said, it displays an aire of strength and a desire to move forward from the pain that Milton went through in the loss of her father. This is a gorgeous tribute that deserves to be listened to and may give comfort to others who are going through similar.
