Inspired by the storied creative history of her home town in New Orleans, independent alt americana singer-songwriter Daphne Parker Powell has given fans all they could possibly ask for as she continues to pour every ounce of herself into everything she produces. Her latest single, Perpetual Light of the Void, proves nothing short of a marquee standout in her collection of work, as it finds a place in our sensibilities through its evocative classic tonality, and vulnerably authentic lyrics that reflect a deep autobiographical narrative. With this recent release, she makes a bold and declarative statement of her talents and proclivities for creating entire ecosystems within her music.
The piece begins as a soft and meditative piano and horn section play in tandem, and from the introductory moments we can feel the world of this music building around us in real time. As the artist begins her vocals, we are immediately drawn to the hauntingly mesmerizing timbre of her vibrato, as it prompts us to fully invest in her message.
A record defined by raw honesty and a fearlessness to speak on one’s own confrontation with mortality and limitations, we feel alongside the orator throughout the presentation, particularly following the refrain, “And I love you like a tooth knocked out. Love you like the ache in the socket. Love you like the blood in my mouth, want to pick you up to put you in my pocket.” A piece that defies convention, it speaks to the artist’s relentless pursuit of truth and refusal to let life’s most difficult questions go unasked for the sake of convenience.
