Ava Valianti /// Birthday Cake

With momentum on her side and no signs of slowing down anytime soon, Newbury, Massachusetts-based indie pop artist Ava Valianti has been making her place in the music scene known far beyond the East Coast scene as she continues to deliver work that reflects authentic emotion set to earworm melodies. Stepping further into the limelight with every musical release, she anticipates her upcoming EP with the debut of her latest single, Birthday Cake. A track anchored in sentimental lyricism set to a hypnotically grounded beat, the tune reveals the boundless talents of the artist as well as their proclivities for allowing themselves to show vulnerability through their work.

A soft symphony of tonal accouterments slowly increases in volume to begin the piece, and immediately we feel the music overcome us as the musicality develops. Valianti’s vocals appear shortly after in a soft, yet resonant tone, she dives right into the core of the narrative as she delivers the opening line “Sitting in despair, wrapping paper everywhere. Lying on the floor waiting for things to change. Out of body, feeling strange.” Through her lyrics that pensively react to a melancholy introspection on the intersection of mortality and ambition, we feel motivated to sit in the artist’s thoughts alongside her as she orates her feelings of another year of her life passing, and the emotions that come with it.

A bold and revealing narrative of reflecting on one’s self and how capable they are of growth and regression over a year, the lyrics find a way to stay with listeners long after the sound has left their speakers.
