Pianist Alexander Laing Delivers Modern Classical Brilliance With “Oceans”

There’s a fair bit happening in “Oceans”, but the track never sounds overcrowded. Composed by Alexander Laing and produced by Morgan Nicholls, the single benefits from having both a strong musical foundation and a well-considered recording behind it.

The piano carries the main tune, while the supporting sounds give the arrangement more breadth. What works particularly well is that these extra elements don’t compete for attention. They add to the overall sound without taking the focus away from Laing’s piano, which is exactly what a track like this needs.

It’s easy to overlook the production side of instrumental music, but it makes a difference here. Nicholls gives the composition a fuller presentation, while Laing’s work provides the substance. The two contributions sit comfortably alongside one another, making the finished recording more than just a piano performance with extra embellishments.

Taken from Laing’s album The Delta Wave, “Oceans” is a worthwhile listen and a good example of the collaboration between composer and producer. It’s an enjoyable release that gives both sides of the creative process room to shine.
