Connor Douglas Ferguson just released his 90s inspired track ‘bricks’ today, 02/28/2025.
‘Bricks’ is a musical rush back into the grunge scene with its washed-out but growly vocals, bass-heavy instrumentation, and thrashy guitars. This track has a heavy punch to it, the bass pulling things along with a confident atmosphere. Then, the vocals cut in with a buzzy filter to them, sounding almost as though through a radio at the intro. Overall, it’s a fresh track for anyone who grew up listening to artists such as Pixies or Nirvana. This single is one that’s here to get listeners headbanging whether that was the plan or not.
Lyrically, this track captures a tale that Ferguson himself says is “about masculinity and sexuality,” but is up to audience interpretation. The meaning he derives can be seen in lyrics such as, “You like to breathe in all my scent / Down on your knees you’ve begged for less.” Though it has this twang of sexuality, it also explores themes such as religious trauma from the eyes of LGBTQIA+ individuals with the line, “Get turned away from heaven’s gate,” in reference to other lyrics on sexuality. On another hand, it uses the repetition of the word “bricks,” in reference to bodies. However, in a track with an exploration on gay relationships, it harkens back to Stonewall and the first brick that was thrown, which sparked a revolution for gay rights. There’s so much to read into in this track, and that gives it so much replayability. So why not give it a listen, or a few, or many?
