Ushering in a new generation of artists to come from London’s underground electronic scene, The New Citizen Kane has made a strong case to call themself the next torchbearer of their genre. Brainchild of producer and DJ Luke Kane, their work has seen an incredible breakthrough in its critical reception this past year on the heels of a plethora of new releases, delighting fans across the globe. As they prepare to celebrate the release of their upcoming full-length album, Psychedelika Pt 1, which they hope to be their largest and most ambitious undertaking yet, they tease their latest single “Eyes Wide Shut,” a marquee standout in the collection.
The piece begins with a soft collection of electronic accouterments, that quickly grow to a dramatic crescendo in the first few bars. Building in instrumental complexity soon after, we immediately feel the world of the music being built around us in real time as the track takes on a personality all of its own that allows listeners to feel the larger than life emotions intended by the artist. A booming and resonant baritone voice then begins the narrative of the tune, as we feel taken away with the story from the opening line “And you’re always on my horizon. One step closer, another step further.”
Emotionally anchored in the repeating lyrics, “Eyes wide shut, but I can leave your heart wide open,” the single showcases the artist’s proclivity for creating powerful, yet sentimental anthems. Having accomplished so much with this newest release, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what the full length work of Psychedelika Pt 1 will bring.
