Sometimes, we have to live and learn! TONIE’s release of “a year ago”, featuring Saenabi & MTLano, has made its way to music land on October 22, 2021. It’s okay, it’s alright, let’s take a closer look at this amazing track.
Based in LA, though currently resides in New York, Brooklyn specifically, TONIE is not just your typical artist. According to their website, TONIE is able to write and produce each synth-pop track from the comfort of their skylit home studio. This was to be considered as “a perfect backdrop for the emotional vulnerability that colors their lyrics” (itstonie.com).
“a year ago” is able to fall under TONIE’s respected genre of synth-pop. They were also able to bring the influence of indie pop, dream pop, electronic pop, alternative pop, and pop with a hint of 80’s vibes that are able to make the listener feel as if they were in the 1980s.
This is an amazing track. The melody, in many ways, is catchy and tuneful. The singers have a stylish vocal tone as they put real feelings into the lyrics. The lyrics are meaningful and thought-provoking with some deep phrases such as “I’m okay, I’m alright, I’m leaving”, “I don’t need to go back in time”, and “…Who I am and who I want to be.” Instrumentally, the track was able to provide an engaging, compelling, and rhythmic accompaniment that has complemented the vocal track quite nicely. How this track was performed both vocally and instrumentally had amazing quality throughout. Overall, the track is original and catchy, and I think it has strong potential to make its way to the top of the music charts.
