Entering with a spectral essence, Netherlands-based alternative rock duo, Silver Lake, have arrived with a haunting debut single, “Under The Silver Lake.” As a precursor to their debut album slated for 2023, the pair are releasing a series of four singles. The partially eponymous “Under The Silver Lake,” carries a subtle, spine tingling melody that maintains a satisfyingly spooky ambience.
Marleen Hoebe and Jesse Koch are a spellbinding pair. Trading off on their solemn vocal duties, the duo carry on the ghostly vibe with a delightful eeriness. As a complement to the frigid atmosphere, a residual chill from their voices provides an extra layer of goosebumps.
Subtlety is one of this tune’s greatest strengths. While there is nothing overtly foreboding about this melody, there is the nagging feeling that something is lurking in its lower depths. A siren call leads you in and, before you know it, you’re submerged up to your neck in a soothing, trancelike melody.
However, there is a tense undercurrent to this track. Even though it doesn’t boast overwhelming power, the furious tapping of a keyboard serves to fill the intensity void. Each note, while they are light in tone, combine for an unexpectedly haunting motif. It is a naturally eerie sensation that originates from an unforeseen source.
Hoebe and Koch take turns in telling the tale of a lady of the lake character, who resides “under the silver lake.” She will “only come out looking for another high.” There is an air of mystery around who or what this central character is, but we’re told to look back at “all the guys she’s left before.” Given this clue, it reinforces the mythical presence that the duo are assumed to be aiming for.
All in all, “Under The Silver Lake” thrives upon keeping you ensconced in an otherworldly realm. You are far removed from the familiar and end up being supplanted into the supernatural. Silver Lake delivers an inspired, ghostly debut that is not short on subtle suspense.
