To the benefit of us all, funk has been slowly seeping back to its rightful spot at the forefront of pop music. Case in point: “My Body,” the latest single from UK singer DULCIE, is a tightly produced and infectiously funky song that puts our English songstress shoulder to shoulder with today’s pop music titans.
Last month, DULCIE introduced us to her funky & soulful style of electropop on her debut single, “Medicate Me.” She’s back this month – and fully in her bag at this point – to deliver a sequel that is even better and much groovier than we had hoped. Built on top of a bubbly bassline that would make Bootsy Collins drool, DULCIE leaves little to be desired with a near-perfect song. It really is like listening to a master – she knows exactly what we want, when we need it, and the journey she takes us on sounds so familiar but is as fresh as ever. Following the lead of recent modern megastars Dua Lipa and Doja Cat, DULCIE is mixing old school instrumentation with new school production that fits her voice like Cinderella’s glass slipper.
Pop artists will always follow trends when writing their music, but it’s their individuality and creativity that allow them to stand out to audiences. DULCIE’s secret weapon is her voice which hypnotizes and mesmerizes with every breath. It’s immediately identifiable and while she could certainly let it loose and blow everyone away, she keeps it right within the pocket and serves the song which is just more credit to her magnificent songwriting. When you can write simple, catchy melodies you don’t need to have a golden voice, though it never hurts.
Perhaps the most shocking (and slightly annoying if I’m being honest) thing about DULCIE’s brilliant mastery is the fact that she is a brand new artist. I don’t mean ‘brand new’ like she’s only been around for a year or two, I mean ‘brand new’ like she’s only been around for a month or two. Go visit her Spotify profile – “My Body” is only the 2nd song she’s uploaded since her debut single a month ago. Either she is secretly a prolific songwriter sitting on a Prince-like vault of old, crappy, unreleased recordings that have served as her training grounds to allow her to finally attain such a superb level of songwriting or she is just that damn good. Either way, DULCIE is catching fire faster than anybody in 2022.
