Dalaina is a singer-songwriter from San Diego who is inspired by r&b, soul, and dance-pop. After an influential trip in Nicaragua, she began to write and make music of her own. “K” is her second single that showcases her strengths as a songwriter and performer. With an interesting juxtaposition of an uptempo, catchy instrumental alongside personal, serious lyrics – Dalaina has crafted a unique sound.

Starting with a hip-hop beat and Whurlitzer e-piano keys, the vibe of the mellow reggae soundscape is right away created. Bring in the classic guitar, hitting on the upbeats, and a nice low end bass and you got yourself the signature sound of a good soulful reggae rhythm. Once her voice is introduced, you’re right away entranced in the wavelength that “K” lives in. Dalaina’s vocal delivery also has a cool resemblance to Citizen Cope and the control of her voice comes off as very impressive.

The hook has a subtly catchy vocal melody that sits in the pocket and is not over the top, but is melodious enough to stay with you. The track also offers nice instrumental breaks with Dalaina’s voice adding ad-lib layers in the background. The lyrics can be interpreted in many ways, but there are many references to the come down of a drug experience and the impermanent nature of chasing a high.

The song really excels in gluing both the context and feeling of the music. There’s a simmering uneasiness to the track, creating a distant unsettling tension that never hits but never leaves either which works really well within the context of the song. The song concludes with the powerful lyrics, “I got a lot of regrets, that I just say I forget.” With relatable and vulnerable lyrics, Dalaina puts herself out there in ways that the best artists do.

“K” is a strong second single by the talented artist from San Diego. We look forward to hearing more music from Dalaina in the future.
